William Johnson L'Engle was a physician in Key West, Fla., who served in the United States Army in the Department of the Pacific, 1856-1861. He died suddenly in Birmingham, Ala., while awaiting his commission as a Confederate Army surgeon. His wife was Madeleine Saunders L'Engle. The collection contains transcriptions of letters of William Johnson L'Engle, M.D., and Madeleine Saunders L'Engle, mimeographed and bound together with biographical material and family letters regarding the history of the L'Engle, Johnson, and Saunders families. The letters were written to his relatives in Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida, and describe family and neighborhood events, with some mention of his medical practice and his journeys to Oregon and Texas with the United States Army. Letters of Madeleine Saunders L'Engle are to her relatives in Georgia and North Carolina, mostly concerning family matters.
